Not a great book but Jmiaa is a good character, the culture and life of Morocco is the more interesting aspect of the book. The life of poor women in patriarchal religious society is similar all over the world. This is a sad life and I understand the humor and bit of soap opera style to lightening the story.

I know it’s supposed to be character based but nothing happens in the book for as far as 50 pages in. The pace is far too slow — and with no promising change in sight.

Straight from the Horse’s Mouth is set in Casablanca and tells the story of Jmiaa, a sex worker, whose life takes a major turn when she is introduced to a filmmaker. Much of her story is dark and depressing but Jmiaa - mostly - refuses to be bitter and resentful. Rather she is an unabashed, resilient survivor. I loved her voice. She is witty, an astute observer of people, irreverent, independent and loyal. She lives life large and is unapologetic about doing so. She is straight-shooting rather than self-pitying. The ending was definitely fairytale-like, but I didn’t care. I was cheering for Jmiaa all the way.

Thirty-something Jmiaa lives in Casablanca, trying to support herself and her young daughter through sex work. The first half of Straight from the Horse's Mouth has some interest to it, with its evocation of the seedier side of life in contemporary Morocco and Jmiaa's determined refusal to indulge in either self-pity or self-reflection. But as the book progressed, it became ever more disingenuous, and the shift from gritty bawdiness to fairytale ending just didn't work.
