As a presidential history geek, this book hit the sweet spot. Inside tales from the room where it happens across 12 administrations. Would highly recommend the audiobook as the production value with actual clips from the past are weaved among the author’s own voice.

This was an interesting look inside The Situation Room for every president that has used it. It focuses a little on how they use it, but then mainly on one major issue per president. You may find some of it not that interesting when it comes to the earlier presidents, but the more recent information – spanning 9/11 through Biden, is fascinating.

There is a plethora of books analyzing the political situation and the people who are the movers and shakers in this arena; there is less that looks at how certain surroundings can influence affairs. This book looks at how one unique such structure has contributed to history. Begun in the years of JFK, the need was recognized for a dedicated space equipped with the most up to date communications equipment and support that would be necessary to create such a safe and secure place for the President to retreat to for sensitive meetings, monitor activities in the field with certain military operations, and to even serve as a “panic” room in case of attack. Stephanopoulos, is a Washington reporter uniquely positioned to observe politics in action. Here he takes on the task of reporting on the birth and operation of the facility known as “The Situation Room”. This room has been the site of crises management for over 60 years, under 12 Presidents. He examines how the functionality of the Room(s) has changed over that time and looks at the continuing need for the future.

Recommend to readers of nonfiction history, politics, American and Presidential history, biography, leadership and journalism.
