There is a reason why this is a classic. This is one of the best books I have read. Dumas writes such a tangled web of stories, but all the threads come together in the end in interesting ways.

I was looking forward to a great revenge story, and while I did get that, there is so much more to this book! It also deals with: justice, redemption, love, debt and gratitude, fate vs free will, perseverance and transformation. This is a book that will make you think and is fun to discuss. The more I think about it, the more impressed I am.

The full book is long, but it’s definitely worth it! I highly recommend reading the full version

DNF ~ 1/3 finished. You could tell this book was written in a time when the author was paid by the word. The first couple hundred pages were well-paced and engaging, but then it delves into a bunch of side plots and loads of characters I couldn't care less about. I don't deny that this book is a classic, but it became downright painful to read once the tedious subplots begin.

I’ve been in love with this book for over 20 years and people are still surprised that a bitch can hold a grudge.

Wow, I'm finally done. And I loved it.
Is it perfect? No.
Is it too long? Absolutely.
But it's still brilliant. And it's strange, but even after reading all that, I want more. I want to follow these characters lives even longer and get even more insight into them and know all that lays in the future, but also it's just way too long.
I do wish I had read a different translation. I didn't realize the copy I have is considered one of the worst until I was already a decent way into it. Still, I don't think it took away too much from the story. I still had my jaw dropping at the crazy plot twists and revelations.
I read the abridged version back in high school. I can't remember enough about that experience to say which way you should go. I think it depends on the person. I am glad I read this again, unabridged. I had forgotten so much and it was good to read it in its entirety.

When I say give me a great revenge story, this is what I mean. Reading the Count of Monte Cristo felt like I had just embarked on the journey of a lifetime. It was a book that I never wanted to stop reading, that I felt could have sparked a thousand more stories, and yet, the end came nevertheless and took my breath away.

If you've ever watched Shawshank Redemption, you'll recognise that same feeling of satisfaction reading The Count of Monte Cristo. This is the book of a lifetime and is certainly one you should pick up. Take as much time as you need with it. Savour the magical moments. When you finish reading it, perhaps you'll reach the same conclusions that I did.
