I haven't been having the greatest luck with Poirot lately.

I think one of the reasons why Christie's works lend themselves well to theatre productions and audio-dramas is that a lot of them are complemented by the process of abridgement. Of course there are exceptions to this (Roger Ackroyd, Sad Cypress, Orient Express) where every scene seems essential to the whole, but I think the rule still stands. I know that may sound like sacrilege to some die-hard fans, but I think Hickory Dickory Dock is a great example of that rule.

This novel felt like it had no sequence. Rather than the typical set-up of a victim (or two), a murderer, and a motive, this novel had several 'culprits' and every one seemed to be having their own problems. It kind of felt like if Christie has wanted to make Murder in the Mews a novel rather than a collection, and just intertwined all the mysteries in the collection into one story.

But of course, every Poirot is improved by the presence of Miss Lemon.

Good save Christie.

Very clever as usual. AND she has some people of color in this one who are smart and accomplished. Big change for her - there’s still some casual racism (and sexism) but it’s a big step up from how she usually writes about anyone who’s not white.

A brilliant detective story with so many twists and turns throughout! Had me guessing right until the end.

I really enjoyed this Poirot book! It felt fresh with the thievery aspect. Like all Poirot books, they don’t need to be read in order. I would recommend this to someone who enjoys a wide cast of characters and a fun twist.

Plot: 4/5. Poirot’s secretary Ms. Lemon asks for assistance helping her sister’s job where something is amiss. When an array of objects go missing and murder happens, Poirot must use order and method to solve the mystery.

Pacing: 4.5/5. This book is fast paced and fun. I found the twists to be mostly unpredictable and really enjoyed it.

Character Development: 4/5. There is a diverse group of characters from different countries and ethnicities. I enjoyed the banter between them even if they weren’t a perfect cast.

Overall Rating: 4/5. There was one character I wasn’t the biggest fan of how she was portrayed but I did really enjoy this one.

Mood: mystery, twisty, puzzle solving
