Interesting puzzle, but I didn’t find the characters or the setting (a boarding house) very intriguing. No huge narrative surprises either. Quaint but forgettable.
Imagine a youth hostel overseen by a very competent woman who invites Hercule Poirot to investigate what almost seems to be petty thievery. This explodes into serious crimes and no lack of suspects and red herrings. This is a solid "police procedural" - H. Poirot partnership. There are few surprises, but the action develops and clues become clear.
Short and sweet review as I cant say much due to not wanting to spoiler anything, and the summary really does sum up whats happening.
All I can say is that it was fine, the story didn't intrigue me as her other novels do. I feel like the inspector took over most of what I'd like to see Poirot doing which is the questioning of suspects.
I didn't start getting invested until the last 50 pages when the reveals where happening. Even then I thought there were too many characters and I got confused about who liked who and who didn't. Overall your basic whodunit, with a lot of whos to pick from.

Miss Lemon is not acting her normal efficient self because she is worried about her sister. Her sister runs a home for students and strange things have been happening. Poirot meets with her to to see if he can ease her minds, but soon becomes intrigued by the strange series of thefts. Soon the murders begin and Poirot needs to apply all of his little grey cells to see that the murderer doesn't escape.
Meh.
A bunch of unlikable characters I wasn't invested in at all. Kind of hoped all of them would end up dead but no such luck. Minimal Poirot. Boring. Tedious.
It's becoming very very clear that I am just not a Christie fan. I mean, she's *fine*. But not this amazing incredible author everyone makes her out to be. Good stuff to read if you just want to pass the time, but nothing to really grab you, enthral you, change your life, change your perspective, or leave you staring into the darkness at night while your mind grapples with the damage the story has done to you.

This was a quick and fun one - a series of seemingly random thefts in a student boarding house leads to a much more sinister series of crimes.

Very slow paced, uninteresting and a tedious read. Dropped it some time in Chapter 9. Sorry Agatha!
