This was first published in the 90s and you can tell. An enjoyable entry in the series although the casual racism is jarring. Sets up the next in the series well.

At Jamie’s insistence Claire fled for her and her baby’s life back to the 20th century to escape the bloody fight at Colloden. Twenty years late in the 1960′s Claire discovers that against all odds Jamie survived Colloden and she must go back without her daughter. The reunion between Claire and Jamie is unforgettable and her initiation back into the 18th century brings surprises.

The third book in the Outlander series is my favorite so far. The story has much more action and adventure than the first two with fewer love scenes for you non-romance connoisseurs. This trip takes us from Scotland to the Caribbean with a few familiar characters popping up here and there. Some will surprise you.

Diana Gabaldon is a master story teller. Her wonderful descriptions of scenery, characters and historical events are fascinating and with the help of narrator, Davina Porter, the book on CD will transport you back in time.

I can’t wait to listen to Drums of Autumn!

Not my fav of the three i’ve read so far… kinda debating whether or not i want to continue the series

Book 18 of 2023: Voyager by Diana Gabaldon

Love this series. Definitely an adult novel. Highly recommend.

I couldn't focus enough to read books at the beginning of the pandemic, so I started to watch Outlander on Netflix. After watching the entire series, I started reading the books, and I'm pleasantly surprised at how much I like the books even though I know the basic story line. The books explain things in so much more detail than the Starz series, and I appreciate the more nuanced glimpses into Claire and Jamie's thoughts.

I also find the author's meta-writing poignant. For example, in a conversation between Jamie and John Grey, they discuss the pros and cons of long, wordy books. And this is a very long book! One conclusion is that sometimes it takes a lot of words to accurately portray complex characters and rich lives. And Jamie appreciated having a super-long book to read during his time living in a cave--just add I appreciate this never-ending saga during this pandemic!!

Another example of meta-writing: at different times and places, both Claire and Jamie appreciate a good romance novel. Claire and Jamie are both smart, sophisticated, deep characters with rich and rewarding lives, but they can still appreciate a well-written love scene.
