Stunning. This book is about taking back your power and embracing your magic. It’s well-written, interesting, and powerful. The chapters are short, the characters are interesting, and the plot is exciting.

I’ll post a full review on my blog in the morning but omg this was a wonderful book! Based on Orisha mythology from West Africa, and inspired by the urge to fight back against police brutality of unarmed Black citizens, Tomi Adeyemi examines a fantasy world where magic users are stripped of their power and beaten down until a few characters decide they want a change, and how they can fight back against how they were taught their whole lives. Loved the character development, the world building, the important themes, and the shocking betrayals. Ends on a cliffhanger and I need the next book now!

This book is a 10/10 for me. It’s so well written, and the characters and plot are perfectly developed. The struggle of the story is directly related to the black experience in the world and especially in contemporary America. This is a story anyone of any age or background could enjoy and learn from. I am excited to read the sequel.

So good. Just…so, so good. Honestly, I would have given five stars if I weren’t so sensitive about violence and bloodshed (and CW THERE IS A LOT OF THAT).

Even so, the magic and tension and love (romantic and familial) and history of Orïsha is immersive. Before I even realized it, I found myself completely invested in the characters and their mission, and the cliffhanger ending makes it easy to jump right into book 2 of the series. The Author’s Note is the most powerful part of the book, though - do not skip. (Contains spoilers).

Highly recommend.

Where do I even begin with this one?

For starters I'm really scared to pick up the second book in this triology. Especially  with the last quarter of this book. Though  a lot happened I was not surprised about.

Of cours the world was beautiful. And the descriptions had its  moments  to.

I want to talk about the main characters Zélie and Amari. Because there was both shock and awe of the growth and confidence.  They both aren't perfect  by any means. Each make huge mistakes. But are  just teenagers that have to face  these major obstacles. In very different life  circumstances.  And both do it in a way that is graceful  but rightfully  pissed off.

The world they live in has made them afraid and tough. But also vulnerable because  of fear. Yet by the end I think are prepared  for  whatever  happens  next in the world of Orïsha. Which is sure to be chaos after  the ending in this first book.

Incredible book. Well crafted plot, character arcs to die for, a cool magic system, complex mcs… so intensely good!

The writing in this book was so intriguing and the plot was fascinating! However, the one couple that was created as a enemies to lovers type thing was mostly annoying and I couldn’t see any chemistry between them. Despite that, this book had an amazing end and I can’t wait to read the next book in the series!
