I really enjoyed the narrative style, most of the characters and pacing of this book. The story follows 2 characters though, and the second is considerably less compelling than the first. Although this offered perspectives that allow the reader to view the story in a more holistic way.

I am incredibly mad because I desperately wanted to love this book and just couldn't. The writing style and historical setting are beautiful and intriguing and the slow beginning and the monastery time really did it for me. The rest... not so much. For one, I was confused about what was going on for way too long. Sure it's fun to if you have to figure out motives and plans but at some point I want to have at least a small idea about what could possibly happen next. That didn't happen here. And not in the good, being-on-the-edge-of-your-seat kinda way, in the why-am-I-still-reading-this-and-who-the-hell-even-is-this-person-I-don't-remember-kinda-way. For a very short time I even cared for some people but they were either never mentioned again or worse. Concerning the two/three main characters, I honestly loved their personal stories in the beginning and then they all kinda just slowly morphed into these war and violence driven people without any individuality. I thought the queerness would carry me through this book but it honestly is a very questionable portrayal of these topics and every bit of warmth and intimacy is quickly extinguished by the plot. This book is about war and not about queerness and individuals but still tried to be and didn't do it well.

You ever read a book that was amazing reviews and wonder if you've somehow read a completely different book? That's what happened here to me.

Things I liked: the concept was cool and I enjoyed the first 50% of the story.
Things I didn't: this is a me thing but by the time we got to the 60% mark I found 2/3 of the main characters unlikeable.
I really liked Zhu at first but then when her ambition took over and she straight up started murdering people that was it for me
.

Truly an epic. Extremely immersive, emotionally devastating in the best way, and an amazing exploration of gender.

Main character Zhu brings some
seriously power hungry she/he questing energy. I enjoyed the exploration of gender in Zhu and Ouyang’s body-mind experiences, and the ever lurking themes of trauma and social/cultural violence and oppression that (sometimes literally) haunts these characters. I felt parts of the book dragged or stalled, and the greater world building or depth of other characters (esp Ma) could have improved some of the slower parts. I’d have enjoyed more development of the ghosts or other spirit world elements but that’s just me. Will definitely be on the lookout for #2!
