I enjoyed Mayken’s story line much more than Gil’s, and
the stuff with the tortoise made me so sad, I just can’t stand animal cruelty and bullying, such an innocent creature😭
. I just didn’t really understand where Gil’s story fit into it all, but overall, it was a great read, it kept me entertained, I learned about a shipwreck in history, and I felt satisfied at the end.

Not what I expected. I was hoping for a friendship across time. Instead there were two separate stories, with similarities and differences.

The writing is haunting. I did find myself having to put it down at points, and didn't have the urge as usual to pick it up again. I just had this sense of dread (well I guess you knew at least one story wasn't going to be a happy one). The beginning felt long, in that there was so much build up and character development I was surprised how little book was left before the real action began. The end, as it sailed towards the final destinations, was very good. The short interweaving chapters, skipping between times was very well done.

The characters and all their flaws, were very detailed, but as viewed from the young. Some moments were just heartbreaking. A very unusual book, that has made me want to find out more about the Batavia.

Potentially more straightforward historical fiction twisted with a more modern storyline (though 1989 is historical by YA standards) than anticipated, at least from Kidd. This is a slower novel, laced with grief. It’s central mystery has a sense of inevitability to it based on the historical record and is less active than the other two novels I’ve read (Himself and Things in Jars). This last sentence is not a judgement but rather to set more expectations in terms of tone and pacing. And while there are beautiful moments and imagery that blend the lines of time, we are largely denied the solace of the supernatural and faced with human horrors. And the ghosts here haunt more in their absence.
