This was a really interesting story. It was generally well written and I stayed interested in the characters and the story. But I had so many unanswered questions at the end, and some of the things some characters did didn’t seem consistent it’s what I thought I knew about them.

This book was full of sorrow and heartbreak. The ending was satisfying although I wish there was an update on July. I’m so happy Monroe was able to escape and get to know his father Essex. This story highlights the love of a mother and her determination, resilience, and perseverance to provide a better life for her children. This story was truly heartbreaking and eye-opening! It is definitely worth reading and worth more stars than I’m allowed to give.

Phenomenal!!!
This was a great read. I love Historical Fiction books. This book had me on edge from just about the beginning. Pheby went through a lot. After having her kids she definitely did what a mother would do for her kids. She put them first and gave them what she did not have. Which was ultimately FREEDOM.
I love this author.
This had been added to my favorite read list for the year.
