This book is incredible. The writing style and range of stories is incredible. I finished a story and just had to sit with it for awhile, but simultaneously wanted to immediately keep reading so I could move on to the next story. I liked how the stories didn't necessarily tie together, but you got the idea that the characters could relate to each other and might know each other in real life.

Seriously - a really incredibly written book and I'm looking forward to reading more books by this author.

Stories of sad, lonely, ashamed human beings trying to escape or at least understand their own desperate feelings. Exquisitely written in stark, emotionless-and-yet-emotional prose with masterful control and compassion. I'm not usually that big on short stories, but Dubus has already become one of my favorite writers of the genre. I loved the diversity of stories and characters within this collection while retaining tight thematic focus.
