Lived up to the hype. Equal parts coming of age story and love letter to New York City. It’s got art, revolution, feminism and basketball tied up in clean narrative. Well done.

I found Lucy's thought-life highly relatable, despite having very little in common with her. It reminded me of 'The Goldfinch' by Donna Tartt and the film 'Ladybird'. I enjoyed seeing New York through the eyes of a resident.

This is definitely on the YA side but a kick ass female basketball player? Love it. The romance aspect actually brought this down for me. I think it could have been stronger without it. 3.5 rounded up.

I was 3/4 into this book and thought, “I haven’t read a novel this good since ‘Let the Great World Spin’.” Turns out, Dana Czapnik was a student of Colin McCann’s. This was such a wonderful book that I can’t even put into words, except to say that Czapnik nailed it.

2.5, but would be unfair to round down. Had its moments but overall was hard to keep my interest.

The feelings in this book, the poetry of NYC, the description of being in the basketball zone, of angst and loneliness. It was so real and so beautiful.

Refreshingly unpretentious coming-of-age novel, full of realistic characters and dialogue.

The first 50% of this was so simulatateously dull and irritating that I would have given up on it if I didn't have to finish it for my book club.

After skim reading and skipping through long boring passages of basketball games (sports, no thank you!), mooning over the obviously awful Percy and drug taking it finally started to get almost interesting. Once Lucy hangs out more with Alexis it gets better.. some bits of the last 50% of this were very good and I started to warm to Lucy (who does not have a believable voice as a 17 year old!) but it's not amazing enough for me to understand the hype over it.

Also skipped the last 3 pages where was essentially just a long list of streets and buildings in New York...

I don't think I'll remember this one. I'm just glad it was short!
