The English Spy is the fifteenth book in the Gabriel Allon series by Daniel Silva.
Gabriel is on the hint for Irish bombmaker, Quinn, after the boat a British Princess and her entourage were traveling on was blown up.
As I have mentioned before, this is another book/series that has been languishing on my TBR- which I finally got around to dusting the cobwebs off- and jumped right in. Read the series back to back.

Exactly what a paget-turner should be like! Great story, compelling characters, fast-moving, quite a few surprises. I loved it!

This novel is #15 in the Gabriel Allon series. It is a fast-paced, thrilling, and almost-believable story about a pair of spies. Gabriel Allon is in the Israeli secret service, who teams up with British commando/assassin Christopher Keller to hunt down an Irish mercenary-terrorist. They run around the world trying to piece together this puzzle of the terrorist's whereabouts. I enjoy novels with plots that are unpredictable, and this novel certainly fits that bill. There are plenty of twists and turns in the story-line, and the action is gripping. There is a lot of "need for revenge" in the story, but the reasons for this revenge are not fully explained until late in the book.

I didn't read this book; I listened to it as an audiobook. George Guidall is an excellent reader, and he brought the story to life for me. He applies a light touch to differentiate voices for the different characters, but it was always enough to help me distinguish who was speaking.

uiteindelijk. [insert eyeroll]

I will begin by admitting I have loved Gabriel Allon since I first laid eyes on the first book. I've watched him suffer and strive. I've seen him do what needs to be done for his friends and his country.

I love Silva's deep understanding of regional politics and have learned a lot by reading these books.

This one has a reflective tone for me...Gabriel is returning to many of the places that have been important to him throughout his career...he returns to people who are important. He returns to the bombing that killed his son and maimed his first wife. Connections from the first book build onto new campaigns.

His personal life continues to be held together by Chiara, his beautiful, heavily-pregnant wife. With just days before the birth of his twins, she supports his latest mission, to hunt down an IRA assassin who may have had a hand in the bomb that destroyed his first family.

The title character is also a character we've met before, and watching him grow into a new role is very satisfying.

The chase is terrific, the dangers real. The old friends rally to help keep Gabriel safe. But there are still threats.

The scene that touched me most deeply was his visit with his former wife, Leah, deeply scarred physically and emotionally. Silva writes the dialogue pitch-perfectly...showing Leah's mind drift from the present to the past and back.

And Gabriel connects his first family and precious Dani to his second with his creative talent...I cried again.

This may be my favorite of all...waiting for what happens when Gabriel takes over the Office...

I've always enjoyed these characters and his style of writing. This one had me completely hooked and wanting to keep reading.

I have to say, I am a bit embarrassed how much I still love this series. It's the characters that keep me in it- the plots always manage to surprise me a little, even with their elements of the formulaic, but after 15 books I am still attached to the people. This book did divert a bit from the usual and explored some new territory, which I enjoyed.

Every time I get to the end of one of these, I wonder how Silva will continue the story, but he keeps managing to pull it off.

It's not 4 starts for literature, but as an extremely well-executed example of its genre, that manages to keep me engaged after years of reading it. As always, Guidall is incredible on the audio edition.

My favorite Daniel Silva book yet!

Thoroughly enjoyed this book, will definitely need to start back at the beginning of this series.
