Daniel Silva

3.5, rounded down because I started this book a half dozen times before I finished it. Daniel Silva is hands down my favorite author in the spy/thriller genre. His character development and complex plots over more than a dozen books have kept his writing from being too formulaic, even as some of his books are better than others.

This one is the end of the English Girl/The Heist/The English spy trilogy within the series, and the middle one is the best of the 3.

Allon is a deeply flawed protagonist, and The English Spy offers luttle in the way of redemption for his character. You don't see much of the classic brilliant Allon vs tortured Allon interplay as you do in prior Silva books, which lives little to balance the errand of vengeance both he and the suddenly redeemed-in-MI6's else Keller are on. It also lacks the usual art world plot line, which is one of Silva's greatest assets - his ability to create interplay between the highly sophisticated worlds of art and international geopolitics.

Overall, a good read, just not enough balance in this one.

While a decent novel, the author uses the classic crutch of israel and the dynamic it brings in the world. There are a few interesting spins and it is well written but very cliche. A decent read not good enough to read all in one seating and keep you awake.

Not his best effort but at least Daniel Silva still makes me want to finish his books and look forward to the next one.

It feels like watching a thriller movie, with intense, detailed, complicated plots. The only problem is that the characters are bit too straightforward and predictable, lacking certain depth and complexity. But still, very good read.

Didn't think it was as good as some of the others in the series...Lots of re-hashes of previous plots....

Daniel Silva writes a ripping suspense story, and he has a great character in Gabriel Allon, the fine art restorer / Israeli master spy. I read the first book in the series, and picked this up at the library, knowing that I was skipping many intervening books, and that wasn't a problem. The cat-and-mouse chase--with the roles reversing every so often--kept the story moving along suspensefully.

Slight spoiler follows, though I'm trying not to give away the actual plot: My complaint about this particular volume is that the main challenge for our protagonists, followed through so many twists and turns in the story, was ultimately resolved in the last chapter, as if it were a tacked-on afterword, as if you might be interested in a kind of "where are they now." An enjoyable read, but not a satisfying ending.

Gostei.
