Loved this book. It was funny, fresh and gave me visions of the sunny Italian coast. Auntie Poldi is a cross between Auntie Mame and Miss Marple, and it works. She’s fascinating, quirky and laugh out loud funny. Can’t wait to see where this series goes!

This mystery was an homage to Sicily, in all its glory. And deceit. Poldi is a 60 yr old German widow who has moved to Sicily near her husband’s family, so that she can drink herself too death with an ocean view. But a mystery presents itself and she soon finds herself a part of the community. The story is told by her nephew, and moves in a seamless way from 3rd person descriptions to first person accounts of conversations with Poldi. Charming. I did discover that I’m not a fan of reading on my phone- which was the only way this was available from my library. Oh well.

I had quite high hopes for this, which it didn't quite live up to. I like the idea of Auntie Poldi and it has some great moments, but ultimately it didn't quite flow the way I was hoping - which could be the translation or it could just be the author's style. Fun but not brilliant.

The good: evocative descriptions of Italy anf Italian culture.
The bad: I found the mystery quite plodding. Also the tone, in parts, was just too crude for my taste.
