If you’re searching out an entertaining and purely escapist read, you might like this story filled with quirky characters, Italian culture, a mystery, and a bit of romance. I thought the choice of narrators was a little odd and one sequence where Auntie Poldi cooks breakfast in the nude in the presence of her 20 something nephew was questionable....but perhaps I over think things! If a man were to do this in front of a girl it would be different I think 🤔 it seems like situations should be able to be reversed to be certain we’re protecting boys as well as girls. Many readers liked this story better than I did.....and although there was a snappiness to the writing, I thought it was just ok.

A good and entertaining mystery with a very interesting main character. The setting was charming and the style of writing interesting.

Many thanks to Houghton Mifflin Harcourt and Netgalley

Phew! I'm exhausted just from trying to keep up with the convoluted story line. I kept thinking I was close to the end only to find there was yet another far-fetched twist.
This is a fun story about the lovable, vivacious Auntie Poldi and her adventures in Sicily. Poldi has recently relocated to Sicily in the hopes of living out the rest of her life in drunken bliss. Despite her attempts to relax into retired bliss, Poldi soon finds herself in the midst of a missing persons turned murder case and, being the ever inquisitive individual that she is, she beings her own amateur investigation. So ensues a story full of hijinks and daring, and always a little mystery.
The story is written from the point of view of Poldi's nephew, a writer who is relating Poldi's story to us as he ostensibly works on his own novel. Through his eyes we see the character of Poldi as she truly is, unapologetically genuine. I loved this character with all of her sassiness and bravado! Poldi is always curious and always concocting her own schemes. This ended up being a really fun story to bring myself into a warmer weather mindset.
I also really enjoyed the setting of this book. Throughout the book Sicily and the local Sicilians around Poldi play a huge part in this story and this book really makes you feel like you have escaped to Italy. I just wanted to hang out in an almond grove sipping drinks and gossiping with Poldi by the end of it!

The first book in the charming realistic fiction mystery series revolving around Auntie Poldi. After the death of her husband and then her parents, eccentric Auntie Poldi moves to a small town in Sicily to drink herself to death by the sea. When her handsome handyman goes missing and is then found murdered, Poldi determines to find justice. She enlists the help of her sisters and sets out to solve the mystery, sometimes with the help of (sometimes in spite of ) the handsome Commissario Montana. Truly a delightful new mystery series.
I enjoyed the character Aunt Poldi a lot, but this book felt a bit lackluster overall. I don't think I'll continue with the series, but it was a fun read.
This was a quirky little murder mystery book featuring Auntie Poldi, an eccentric 60 year old Bavarian lady, recently relocated to Sicily with the intention of drinking her way through retirement until her death. Along the way, she gets tangled up in solving the murder of Valentino, a local bit of eye candy.
This book was a quick, entertaining read, and the first in a series. I will keep the other two in reserve for when I need a light read. I found the book enjoyable, but not rave worthy.

An alcoholic Auntie Mame with a penchant for men in uniform, retires to Sicily to drink herself to death with a nice view of the ocean and Mount Entna. What could go wrong? But when her handsome handyman goes missing (and then turns up dead), her hunting instincts go into high gear. Wig askew, she Miss-Marple's her way around the island, all the while eyeing up the police inspector assigned to the case. A fun read.
