Why the Whales Came is a book I was introduced to when studying Michael Morpurgo’s works in primary school.

One of the reasons I love Morpurgo as a writer so much is his agility at writing for different age groups; he can appeal to more emotionally mature readers and much younger readers, as he does with Why the Whales Came.
A lot of the themes and elements that he writes about in Why the Whales Came are very similar to themes he’s explored since and in more detail with The Wreck of the Zanzibar, though comparing them is impressive because they both demonstrate how he writes about similar subjects in different ways both for readers and by narrators of different ages.

I’ll always prefer The Wreck of the Zanzibar because it’s the book that introduced me to Morpurgo but Why the Whales Came is a worthy companion piece to it because it’s the same writer telling what’s essentially the same story in a way that suits a different readership.

I reread this book as I read it when I was younger, still a big fan of Michael Morpurgo's books. A good book for a quick read.
