I loved the premise. The parts where the main characters interacted was very cute and fun to read. The extra plot outside of her roommate just being a vampire, unneeded. The rushed ending, unneeded. The female lead, Cassie, is kind of generic when she’s placed in scenes without Frederick. Her life outside of her new living situation is boring and kind of a cliche with the way it’s written. Her entire art career added absolutely nothing to the plot. I think I would’ve enjoyed a cute book about them learning about current society instead.

The basic concept and early character building is enjoyable. Things went sideways for me with the introduction of the romance plotline, as the entertaining elements took a back seat and the author fell into some unfortunate common plot issues. Would have loved a book that centered on the "odd couple" roommate relationship and Cassie's job of helping Frederick adapt to the modern world.

I like this one. I liked how chill it was and that it took place in Chicago. I love magical realism and I think this handled that well. I also appreciated the plot being just enough and the the third act being only an external conflict that didn't affect the actual relationship.

The characters were good. I wish there was a little bit more flavor out side of the (oy) Reylo conventions, but I got some chuckles out of the interactions. I think there could have been a bit more momentum in the relationship, which kept me from reaching to immediately get back into it.

I did want to toss that one fedora-wearing vamp into the trash though. Too cringe even for me. I think he could have been written in a way that was funnier as opposed to kind of triggering, honestly. But that's minor, mostly.

Interested to see what this author does next and would love to see more lightly paranormal works!

A cheesy rom com and a light read. Think less Dracula and more What We Do in the Shadows and youll have a much better time.
