this was exactly what i expected it to be in a not great way. jealousy, invasions of privacy, possessive love interest, deeply insecure yet ~different from other girls~ lead… sigh

the sex scene wasn’t that spicy, ive read hotter from virgins on ao3.

the vampire bit was kinda cool but it gave watered-down volturi vibes.

anyways, none of this was for me, but a person looking for tropey, easy cishet romance with a halloween twist might! no shame just really not my jam

This book wasn’t bad I just wanted more I think. I feel like there were times the book lagged and nothing was really happening even though I know it was to build the relationship.

I really liked Frederick. He was adorable and charming and loveable. Cassie, I went back and forth with. I found that sometimes she acted immature for her age (30s) and other times she was a bit cringey. The sex scene wasn’t bad but also not the best thing I’ve ever read.

Overa lol, the story is cute and adorable a light palette cleanser for fall, but I think it could’ve done more. Have the characters get to know each other more? Talk about something other than his hotness? Lol I just needed more.

I’m sorry, but I could barely get through this book. The plot was forced and often didn’t make sense. The characters were cringey and unrealistic (and not just because some of them were vampires). It felt like some parts of the story were just added at random, with no correlation to the plot. It was trying to hard to be quirky, and just felt like reading fanfiction. I kept waiting for it to pick up, but it just never did. The ending was weird, anticlimactic, and so forced just as a way to end the book.

I don’t recommend.

The vampire lore didn’t make sense. The whole point is that Frederick has been asleep for 100 years, but every other vampire is just as clueless about the modern world. And why bring up hunters to never mention them again? And Frederick says he’s been asleep for 100
years, which would’ve put him asleep in about the 1920s, but he knows NOTHING past like 1899. How? The timeline doesn’t make sense. I just don’t get it. Ah. And the ENDING? Saving the day with a fake TikTok? This book itself is going to age poorly.

Also, maybe it’s just me being stupid, but the spicy scene came out of nowhere for me. Wasn’t expecting that!

"Over the past two weeks I've discovered that in this city of millions, you are one of a kind."

This was such a cute and entertaining read! It's ideal if you want to go for a cozy Halloween read or even if you want a funny romcom.

The characters are truly lovable. I loved reading not only about Cassie and Frederick but also about the people around them - Reginald being the icon that he is gave us some of the funniest, laugh-out-loud moments. Frederick being the vampire version of Mr Darcy was not something I knew I needed but I'm so glad I got. He started as clueless about modern society and the modern human world and, by the end of the book, had managed to learn so much while still maintaining his unique personality.
I loved Cassie's determination and passion for all the things she loves and the way she went all out for those she cares about. She handles things quite rationally all things considered and I loved how independent she was.

I think what this book did well, especially following certain revelations, is that it was clear that Cassie's right to make informed decisions and the way she would proceed with them was entirely up to her. Until the very end, it's her choice. Which yes bare minimum, but I loved that.

"I will see you at home eventually. With saucepans."

I have SO MANY favourite scenes, between the shopping trip and the social media training or the post-its and letters (p.s. how dare you attack me with THAT letter moment). However, the saucepan texts were iconic, I was laughing throughout that entire exchange. As well as all texts between Frederick and Reggie.

The only reason why I didn't give this 5 stars was that towards the ending, things got slightly over-the-top for me personally. At least given the tone of the story until that point.

P.S. 2: You're telling me we're getting Reginald's book next??? YES PLEASE.

This is such a fun, kind of camp, low stakes (pun intended) vampire romance. I actually could have done with a smidge more danger and definitely would have welcomed more spice!

Frederick is one of the sweetest heroes I’ve read, so out of place in the modern world and he’s so romantic.

Also really liked the epistolary elements - lots of letters, texts, lists and diary entries which help to tell the story.
