Some additional things from the book that I feel obliged to mention:

  • he gets multiple raging hard ons but also doesn’t blush (this is mentioned several times) and obviously is cold with no heartbeat
    • No explanation is ever offered to explain how he is able to have an erection at all
  • he can’t orgasm unless there’s “blood involved” so he doesn’t want to actually fuck her because he’s “afraid he’ll lose control” so he’s like losing his mind BUT she decides she can fix this problem by BLOWING HIM (how is blowing him different than P in V penetration in this context? No idea) and the reasoning she gives is because it’s helped previous boyfriends last longer in bed if there’s a preemptive orgasm
    • GIRLY POP, that’s not the solution you think it is for this particular thing?
      • Anyway so while blowing him, she makes him bite her thumb and that works apparently? And he doesn’t take enough to hurt her?
      • You may be asking: “Why didn’t he just stick a twisty straw into a bag of blood from the mini drinks fridge he has in his room as a mid coitus refresher?” And let’s just say…I have no idea.
  • He tells her she “smells different when she’s aroused” LMAO BRO is that the only way you can tell???? In the context of the scene it’s implied that that’s how he knew she wanted him, which….what?
  • Each vampire has a random “gift” (no explanation as to the logistics here) so his friend can FLY but his gift is that he grows fruit??? And when he’s nervous, that random fruit grows faster?
    • There’s literally a “forbidden room” in the house that’s mentioned SEVERAL times that smells fruity when you walk by it and it’s because fucking pineapple and kumquats grow in it???! And that’s the entire secret?!?
    • Don’t worry though! Every week he donates it to the food bank.
      • I don’t know why this was specifically explained to us when there was literally no additional context about these random powers or how they’re dispersed?
  • I don’t think the daylight hurts these vampires? The only thing that makes them vampires is that they have a random ass power and are immortal. Daylight, mirrors, crosses, stakes, etc don’t seem to make any difference? There wasn’t even a scene about eating garlicky food which honestly feels like a massively squandered opportunity
    • There’s a conversation that happens when they watch Buffy together about what these shows “get right” about vampires and he basically says “they’re right that we’re broody” and because that ONE thing matches up, it’s implied that there was at least one vampire in the Buffy writers room

I am really confused about how I feel about this... Now I listened to this in Audio and has nothing against Gilli Messer because she did a fantastic job of bringing this book to life but that almost heightened my issue with this book. Which is that Cassie has almost no personality, which is completely overshadowed by the amazingness of Frederick's personality.

So Cassie is down on her luck, she is broke and needs to find an improvement in her job and living arrangements. So she finds an ad on Craigslist which seems way too good to be true... an awesome apartment, in a good area with exceptionally cheap rent, so obviously cue warning signs and red flags, because who would rent a room so cheap besides a psycho? She checks out the apartment and her potential roommate seems a little too into "method acting an episode of Downtown Abbey or Bridgerton" than a guy from the 21st century - but otherwise isn't too weird... ANYWAY, after she agrees he won't murder her in her sleep she moves in and is welcomed by a bowl of Kumquats. NOW Obviously from the title, Frederick is a vampire who has just woken up from a 100-year naptime. He now needs someone to help him adjust to this date and time and calls on his lovely new roommate for help -especially in the CRAZY DILEMMA of ordering a cappuccino!

So Cassie is plain, boring and she lacks character. She just feels meh. I struggled to see that spark that made her special and couldn't understand why Fredrick was so enamoured by her, except for the fact that she was one of the few people he had interacted with who was nice to him... The only thing about her that makes her "appealing" is she is an artist and that's like almost her whole personality because she uses waste to make her pieces. It was too perfect, too cookie-cutter.... tooo bland and generic.

Then contrasting to her there is Frederick... he's so outdated, so outlandish and so formal - following proprietary rules of societal politeness from the 1900's. But because he is so formal and dashing he is a perfect adorable gentleman. Every scene with him in was stolen by his magnetism, and utter ridiculousness at his cute inability to understand modern society. It was insane and cute and I love him so much!

I am not going to comment too much on the depth of the story because it doesn't really exist - this is meant to be a light rom-com so take it for that because if you start digging deeper there are PROBLEMS...
1) His friendship with Reginald?
They dislike each other but Reggie REALLY cares about Fred... and this is just blown over
2) The Stolen Blood that never actually gets solved? Why keep putting these news snippets in? Like what does it add to the plot?
3) The Kidnapping? Like WHAT - that didn't feel thrown in there for no reason whatsoever...

The Tropes in this:
▶ Vampire X Human Romance
▶ Age gap romance
▶ Forced proximity
▶ Roommates to Lovers
▶ Slow burn
▶ Forbidden romance
▶ He falls first
▶ "Who did this to you"

I mean - I didn't hate it... but it's not AMAZING...

Possible spoilers but not giving specifics. I mention how I feel about the ending but do not give details, just vibes here.

Described to me by a fellow bookseller as a mix of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Kate and Leopold”. Lovable regency romance mixed with vampire drama with a dash of a modern rom-com? Sounded like a perfect palette cleanser. I really wanted to like this but with all its potential “My Roommate is a Vampire” fell completely flat.

The characters were lacking; moments of promised lovable character development was rare and mixed with drawn out, repetitive and sometimes, extremely cringey dialogue. The author focused on the most random things for far too long, leaving the ending feeling rushed and their connection hollow. We were also given hints to some really interesting lore and secondary characters but instead of exploring what they could add to the story, we get a vague mention and then sent right back into the same exhausting plot the author would not break from.

Overall, it was a relatively cute story with some genuinely hilarious moments of “wtf did they just say??” but felt like a first draft.

P.S. If I never read the words “staring at (insert mundane item, like shoes, here) like it was the most interesting thing in the world” or the word “incredulous”, again, it will be too soon.

This books is lighthearted and enjoyable. I had moments where I genuinely laughed and ultimately found myself enjoying the easy read.

This book is pretty much the epitome of rom-com energy. And considering that was the goal of the author, I would say it met it's mark. I know if I ever need a pick me up, I'll probably read this book again.

I would recommend reading this book when you want something light hearted, that gives off massive rom-com energy, and that you can relax with when you need to.
