My overall feelings is that it is a very good and very emotional book. I cried a lot. Because the author spared no expense when it came to the traumatic details of her life and her feelings.

It's a good book. I have some issues. Like a white author using the n-word even if it came from the mouth of someone else and its a memoir. The lines are blurry for me so I leave that issue to those it pertains to.

Like I said. The details in this book are very very hard to deal with sometimes. At least for me. Substance abuse, S*xual Assa*lt, Neglect, Childe Abuse. Things that hit a little too close for home for me. This book is an eye opener for sure though.

But I would of felt better reading this at a different point in my life. I'm reading this as a summer reading assignment before my sophmore year of highschool. I am pretty young and admittedly not emotionall  equiped to handle the topics this book has. Often reading it felt too trauma inducing.

I beg of any highschool teacher to re-think giving this to your students.  The topics may be important and relatable to some students but it is  extremely triggering. Though I know most students wouldn't read it had they been given the choice so forcing it on them may be the only way. I can't stress enough how irresponsible and negligent it feels to give such a triggering book to Highschool students who may experiencing all that in that moment.

I was given 0 warnings beforehand. Nothing mentioning content warnings. An amazing read as it may be. But I suggest to people to be more careful with this book.

Read this book in school and it should have come with a warning, so I'll be the one to give you a heads up. This book is about abusive parents who are more interested in chasing their 'dreams' than taking care of the children they have created. Be aware that the book contains child abuse, children going hungry, terrible living conditions, mental illness, drug abuse, and goodness knows what else- these were just things that stood out to me. While this is apparently a true story, going into this book unprepared is not a good idea for many readers.

Save yourself some time and go read Educated instead.
