One of the saddest and challenging stories I’ve ever read. It truly represents the complexities of family relationships and poverty.

Had to read for class but actually enjoyed it. Very “make your life your own” sort of story.

Shares such an interesting family’s life story and horrible abuse in such a matter-of-fact even “lighthearted” way. Well-written—expresses the love and loyalty the family had despite their blatant lack of basic care/needs.

I don't think I've ever been so invested (and angry) while reading a memoir like this. I was filled with loathing for Jeannette's parents and pain for her and her siblings.

But the storytelling is second to none. You feel like you're right there beside these kids as they struggle their way through life.

This is a must read, especially for those who believe they don't or won't like non-fiction. I think this one will change your mind!

It reads like a season of Shameless, it’s so sad. Over and over adults failed those kids. And yet they continued to have relationships with their parents. Families can be so complicated.
