Mesmerizing! Which is the natural world, after all....

This is on my required reading list for my Children's Lit. course this fall. I wanted to expose my students to a book with limitless potential for young AND old readers to become more passionate about the natural world and all its treasures...There are some excellent online resources to accompany using this book in the classroom and outside of it.

Such a lovely, calming experience to listen to this on audio, complete with nature sounds. Didn't rate all of the poems, but that tends to be the way with poetry collections... for me.

When they created the most recent edition of the Oxford Junior Dictionary, they removed around forty nature words and replaced them with tech words. Somewhere, a committee decided that these nature words were no longer important enough for children to know or use, so they were removed from the dictionary as our society moves toward a virtual era. The Lost Words is a spellbook of sorts, a hope and desire for these words to still remain in circulation among the up-and-coming generations.

I really enjoyed this book. A coworker showed it to me because she knew how much I love words and the English language, and she was right: I loved this book. First of all, it's huge. It's like a coffee table art book, and I think that makes it all the more magical. Second of all, it's an all-around beautiful book.

The authors take twenty of these lost words and give us a poem, a single-page illustration, and two double-page illustrations for each word. All of the artwork is done in watercolor, which is my very favorite medium, and I loved it all. The poems are magical and engaging as well.

I was really surprised to learn that among the words removed from the dictionary were acorn, otter, raven, willow, ivy, and even dandelion. Those are all common words I used as a child and still use today, so it's sad to know that technology is taking over our lives so much that kids don't even need to know what a dandelion is anymore.

Overall, this book was very lovely. I recommend it to all children, plus any nature lovers, art lovers, or word lovers out there. It's a beautiful addition to any book collection.

Listened to as an audio book and absolutely loved it

Beautiful pictures by Jackie Morris, intriguing words, put together so intrinsically. An absolutely enjoyable morning read, and my first read on non fiction November. If there is such a thing as non fiction after all ;0)

I received this book for Christmas, and although I had been eyeing it up for a while, I still was taken aback by how beautiful it is. The illustrations are gorgeous, I could spend hours just looking at the pictures. And the words - I love words, but this has made me fall in love all over again. Robert’s poetry is a joy to read and as a Year 1 teacher, I will definitely be sharing this book with my children and making sure these words are not forgotten in my class. Bonus feature - my class are called Otters - they will love the fact there is a poem all about us!! A beautiful book to keep and share for years to come.

The audiobook alone was a masterful piece of written and audio art. A 45 minute production of meditation and poetry that I am definitely going to revisit this again and again. I will also be purchasing a physical copy at some point.
