Although the book was compelling got read and really sucked me in, the basic plot doesn't hold up if you think about it too much, Don't wonder how the alien ecosystem could work with so few creatures filling its niches, or why the secret about the aliens doesn't make any sense from an evolutionary point of view. The book is a rare book that portrays aliens and really alien, and not just humans with a few quirks.

An enjoyable read.
The highlights are the interactions with the aliens and this works on a bit of a meta-level whenever you leave them behind to read Bea's messages which are really miserable. Its a clever way to put the reader in the same boat as Peter: Please stop running my good time Bea.
I think Peter is a bit of a limiting factor in terms of how philosophical the book can get. He just isn't that deep of a thinker, even his engagement with his faith is very face value.
The book leaves a lot of ambiguity about the future of the various characters, but does a good job wrapping up the emotional core of the story.

It’s an enjoyable story to hear…. With absolutely no resolution to a single plot point.

I'm a sucker for explorations of religion and faith in sci-fi, I'll blame reading The Sparrow at a formative time. There are obvious parallels here with the central plot revolving around a missionary doing his thing on an alien world resulting in a struggle reconciling their faith with what they find.
Here though the central struggle is between the protagonist's relationship with his wife and his faith and what happens when those are, for the first time, not in alignment. The sci-fi is secondary and this book is mostly a human story. Not completely satisfying but a satisfying read in a melancholic gray rainy day sort of way.
I still prefer The Sparrow.

This is one of the most depressing books I’ve ever read.
I find it near impossible to give up on a book after starting. This is one of those books I really should have just put down. The story, character, and writing did NOTHING for me. I guess I kept reading in hope of some climactic event. Horribly disappointed.

Creeeeeeeeeepppppeeee! I don’t like space because it’s just not something my brain can normalize, being that far from everything and everyone you know, love and mostly understand. This is like my worst nightmare. Being so far from everything you love that you start to lose it to the point you don’t know if you’ll ever be able to recover it. Also, this is exactly what I think corporate rich people are like! : : gets the heeby jeebies just thinking about it : :
