I went into this issue not expecting much, sorry if that sounds harsh. But the idea of combining Shuri and Groot…well it sounds like a bit of a goof, right? And admittedly it did absolutely have its humorous moments. But it also had a lot more going on than that.
This is one of those plots that’s difficult to talk about without spoiling it all. I will say that it was more interesting than I had expected, and that the series did justice to all of the characters involved. And bonus points: it laid the groundwork for another, bigger problem.

3.5 Stars. I loved Rocket in this and honestly even though this series is about Shuri, she is my least favorite character.

This was the low point of the first collected volume for me. I bounced off it, hard. Astral projection into the mind of Groot, while being attacked by a giant bug. It's not interesting, it does nothing to forward any character work, it's just... I'm sorry, but there was nothing I liked about it. Spectacle over substance.

I try to give every new series a shot, but I absolutely hate this issue of Shuri. If I hadn't had the next issue right next to me, I would have stopped reading here. It just felt like it sucked all the momentum out of the series for me. Why transport Shuri into the body of Groot? How does this move the plot forward in any way? In short, it doesn't. It only serves as a comedic filler issue of Shuri interacting with Rocket, which is fun but not worth this issue. Also, I guess it gave a reason for the later big bad, but even that feels tacked on at the end. Guys, do better than this. Give Shuri interesting things to do, or don't even write a Shuri series.

I really enjoyed this mashup, and the art style really worked for me when the characters were in space. I've liked the pace of the series. Every issue, it feels like the plot is moving forward, and I learn something new about the world. Next issue looks like we'll see our first major antagonist.

Who would have thought a team-up with Shuri and Rocket would work so well?!
