The best part of this book is the 1974 stuff, and that's all just lukewarm Mary Shelley fanfiction in a Fleetwood Mac AU -- so then, what's the point?

4.5/5, rounded
i went into this book fairly blind, and genuinely enjoyed the audiobook experience. i liked the split perspective with paralleling plots, and thought both narrators did a lovely job.

i enjoyed the part of the story set in the 70's, and the aspects of the modern plotline that tied to it, more than emily's life. chess drove me a little mad, but thankfully it wasn't constant. i loved the story ending with mary, and was not expecting the revelation she had. while i do have a few gripes, i would read/listen to this again.

however, i wouldnt consider this a thriller, and didnt realize it was meant to be one until perusing reviews when i finished. i do think i would rec it with a minor calcification on the genre.

I have to admit, when I got to the second chapter and realized the book was going to alternate between the present and the past- I was a bit bummed. With that said, it turned out to be an exceptional read and I was pleasantly surprised left wanting more. I love how the stories interwove! The characters were well developed, chaotic, dark, and complex- that kept you wanting to follow their drama to see what they would uncover next.

Rachel Hawkins is a phenomenal author and I can’t wait to read more.

We have two main stories, both happening in this beautiful villa in Italy. One story is in the past of two minor sisters that go have a good time with a couple of notorious rock stars. And a somehow similar story in the present where two best friends that are also well renown writers take some time off to create their next best seller book.

Initially the story in the present with Emily, the victim of an insensible and cheating husband, was pretty intriguing. Until the end when she made some choices that made no sense to me.

The narrator of the story in the past and more specifically Mary hasn't been the best choice in my opinion. And due to this fact, i felt that I didn't care at all for Mary's story.

The ending was a bit farfetched for me.

Thank you NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for allowing me to read this book!
