I remember when I first read this book, right after it came out, and I thought it was the best sci-fi story I'd ever read. It's no longer "the best" in my view, but still close to the top and definitely one of my all-time favorites. I went on to read the first two sequels, which are almost as good, so maybe I'll review them some day.
