"I bring you the whole of my heart at the rising of the moon and the setting of the stars."

This book took me by surprise. There were a lot of ups and downs, but in truth, I couldn't stop reading about the magic, politics, and mythical creatures. The level of detail that this story has is unmatched, and I love that the author found her inspiration through Philippine mythology. This epic fantasy reminded me of Star Wars; the political war, rebellion, light and dark (force), and the technology oldschool airships. The slow burn romance between Talasyn and Alaric is very prickly, and if they don't confess their real feelings by book two, I might explode.

One of the best fantasy books I’ve read in a while! Absolutely thrilling and enchanting and I fell in love with the world-building and beautiful characterization of our leads. Thea captured the enemies to lovers dynamic perfectly without having to sacrifice the tension quickly, the chaos in both their minds as they struggle with their own loyalties and ideologies was deliciously written and I am so excited to see when they begin to choose each other over the greater good. The tumultuous “will they won’t they” had me tearing my hair out but by god was it worth it!! Cannot wait for the sequel!!

Also,

Chapter 38, page 450.

DNF Page 119

Okay, I tried really really hard with this one. I’m a firm believer of DNF and not making yourself read books you do not enjoy but this year I wanted to push myself until I absolutely cannot and unfortunately this is the first victim of 2024.

The beginning of The Hurricane Wars dumps a whole lot of information I had to re read to make sure I had things right (and even then I had no idea what was going on). The magic system is not explained very well and I was left with visuals similar to that of Dr Strange from Marvel.

Talasyn our FMC is the last remaining lightbringer (whatever that means) and has a “connection” to a neighbouring island she has to visit to aid in the war (don’t get excited the connection is predictable). Alaric our MMC regularly runs into Talasyn and every interaction they have involves a few sarcastic comments and a pointless fight scene. I’d like to point out one reason they run into each other is because someone betrays Talasyn and the whole situation is completely forgotten about as if it was expected?

The Hurricane Wars seems to make an attempt of combining fantasy with modern technology but misses the mark completely. The story moves so fast that I felt there was no where near enough time to get to know the characters. Alaric’s actions make no sense and Talasyn has exceptional use of her magical abilities for someone who had to hide them most of her life.

If you’re interested in a dark side/light side type story feel free-but I wouldn’t go running to your nearest book store anytime soon.
