This was slow until about 60ish% in when the twists and good stuff started coming to light.

I do wish Cardan would've redeemed himself, or that his confession to Jude tugged at my heart a little more. I just wanted more.

DID WE READ THE SAME BOOK?

oh my god

okay first of all the writing was terrible? It's a Y/A book with dark themes but at the same time its so stupid you would say it's a childrens book. Plot actually started to appear after the 200th page. The world didn't make any sense? Felt like the author was just throwing random magic stuff left and right that didn't feel connected in any sort of way. And don't get me started on the description of everyones hair and eye color every 10 pages? Didn't help paint the picture of this oh so magical world.

Now our main character...she dreams of being a knight but at the same time neglects her practice for some guy she doesn't even know if she likes?
And Cardan...their "romance" didn't feel like anything. His character was basically really fucking rude and bully guy but oh noooo they do the same to him at home and we are supposed to be like "yeah okay i understand".
And also is everyone there a murderer?
AND DON'T GET ME STARTED on the scene where they poisoned Jude and she was undressing IN CLASS? AND NOT EVEN ONE TEACHER DOES ANYTHING? ARE THEY SCARED OF THE 17/18 Y.O PRINCE? OH MY GOOOOOD.
Ending was alright i guess compared to everything else. Not gonna read the next books haha no chance. I was just pushing myself to finish this one.

i want to formally take back anything bad i have ever said about this book. i judged it far too early and i am deeply sorry.

this was SO good. political world building, complex main character, yes sign me up. some of the twists were a little predictable but others had my jaw dropped. it reached a point about halfway through (perhaps a little beforehand) where i just did not want to put the book down.

jude was such a well crafted protagonist, incredibly complex and driven by determination, especially when it came to proving others wrong about her. (i did not see some of the murder twists coming but i also support women’s wrongs as well as rights, so i love you queen jude)

cardan, i originally was very doubtful of since i went in knowing he would eventually become the main love interest. however, as the book went on, i absolutely loved his character. he’s witty and indeed charming and some one liners are fantastic. my most normal (insane) boy ever.

oriana, i was unsure about, but i have decided that ultimately, i love her character. i hope i see her in the future books. (no one is more surprised at this than me)

i absolutely loathed taryn and locke as characters, not in the way that i hate the way they were written, but that they were created as bad characters so well. i have a particular dislike for taryn, please bin her. taryn hater for life.

i’m interested to see how the repercussions of jude’s actions will play out in the next two books, especially because of the “one year and a day” promise from cardan. i’m also excited to see their relationship develop, both romantically and otherwise. i have read a lot of romance books, but i really like that the romance between jude and cardan was more sub plot in this, i think i would’ve docked my rating slightly if the romance had been main plot.

announcement: this book is a perfect example of how knife to throat tension should be wrote.

if we need further testament to how much i have loved this book following my re-read/re-evaluation, i have annotated the last half of it (i forgot to annotate the first half, whoops)

anyways, i am anxiously awaiting the arrival of the rest of the series that i ordered from amazon just before finishing the last two chapters because i must have more of this world/lore.

p.s. if you’re going to read this book, please listen to radiohead’s ‘black star’, ‘no promises’ and ‘exit music (for a film)’ whilst you do so (thank you luce for the suggestion of two of these)
