Oh, Od Magic. You are so fluffy and earnest and full of wizards and magic and princesses and labyrinths. These things are familiar and pretty and can be interesting, I guess, if you're in the mood for them. I was not.

Maybe if I were sixteen I would have loved this, but it was a little too heavy-handed and predictable, and I got tired of McKillip's characters being so . . . I've got to go with "earnest" again. Maybe it IS a YA novel. That would make sense.

Whatever it is, it's pleasant enough. That is just what it is: a pleasant book, a nice book. I probably just picked it up fifteen years too late.

Well, I enjoyed reading this book as much as I usually enjoy Patricia McKillip. But it is not her best. Occasionally, she gets preachy at the end of a book, and to the extent that she lets it overtly creep in, the artistic genius seeps out. The theme of this one was freedom and oppressive government. I think she should really stick to writing about relationship issues.

I think I would have appreciated this story more when I was younger. Now it felt a bit too simple, a bit too neatly tied up. I liked a lot of the elements, the Magicians, the many different interwoven plot lines. But the characters felt like caricatures, and the plot was just a bit too plotted.

An absolutely beautiful fantasy story, Patricia A. McKillip has crafted a fantastic world and characters. It feels as if every paragraph has been well thought out and I am very impressed with how many characters and stories are woven into this stand alone book without it feeling clunky or over burdened.
