This was so stinking cute! The cover of Batcat definitely drew me in to wanting to read it but the story inside was so charming. We follow Batcat who uses they/them pronouns and enjoys living alone. However, one day they find that a ghost begins to haunt them. They decide to visit the neighborhood witch to find a spell to get rid of the ghost. The witch then sends them on this extensive journey to find these ingredients for the spell. Along the way, Batcat is made to feel as though they aren’t “bat” enough or “cat” enough leading them to understanding that there is probably more to the ghost than meets the eye. There is clearly a connection between this story and those that identity as gender non-conforming. These are the types of books that I love to see where kids get the chance to understand that being yourself is enough. With such a beautiful storyline and beautiful art, this is one that you don’t want to miss.

Cute graphic novel about Batcat and their quest to get rid of the ghost haunting their house! The illustrations were fun, though not as nice in greyscale as I’m sure they are in full color. Lovely theme about accepting yourself just as you are and others as they are, too. I look forward to sharing this book with my 7 year old.
I received an advanced review copy via Netgalley, receipt of which did not impact my review.
