4/5 stars. I listened to this audiobook as a bedtime story because I was having difficulty falling asleep. This was a wonderful bedtime companion. I enjoyed the adventure.

I’m so glad I reread this middle grade classic! This story is all about the power of loving others, loving yourself, and accepting who you are, which literally gave Meg Murry the power to save the universe. Meg hates how she looks and the fact that she is different than her peers and is so misunderstood but she sees firsthand what a terrible place a world is without differences in it. So many great life lessons in this book..love can overcome evil…our faults can also be our strength…bravery is a must…love (God) is the most powerful force in the universe. So good!
Side note about the power of books - the first time I read this book is when my 5th grade teacher Mrs. Adams in Lee Co, Georgia read it aloud to us in the early 1980s and she was straight up SOBBING by the end. That was one of the first times I saw what an emotional and moving impact a book could have (my mother also cried reading me Charlotte’s Web 🙂). I’ve wondered as I’ve gotten older if Mrs. Adams was premenopausal 😂😂 (I have no idea how old she was) but I have never forgotten that reading experience!!

oh no, it’s anti-communist propaganda :(

likes: mrs. whatsit, mrs. who, & mrs. which (their characterization, the way they communicate and why, and the world building around what they are), tessaring, and the different planets

dislikes: the writing (very ‘60s), the characters and their relationships (underdeveloped), the lack of action taken by the characters/limited agency, the meandering plot with unanswered questions, and the perpetuation of anti-communist propaganda

I enjoyed this book, it was entertaining, but i didn't think it was anything to wrute home about. I found the story simple, the characters flat and the dramatic scenes too dramatic. Maybe I should have read it as a kid.
