I can see why I loved this one in my childhood. And while it may not have impacted who I am today as much as, say, A Little Princess did, it has definitely impacted my reading tastes to this day. Hard sci-fi, with a heavy dash of 'if your science is advanced enough it's indistinguishable from magic', as well as a section about a dystopian society, and a main character who loves math but struggles with  her temper and social interactions.

There are some Christian themes in this book, though also an odd comment that seems to put Buddha on the same level with Jesus, and a character called a medium who can see the future. Generally, content is limited to some more or less veiled comments about infidelity, a bit of bullying and fighting, and the usual danger and tension you'd expect from an adventure story. This would make a great family read aloud, though for reading on their own, I wouldn't recommend it for the very youngest readers.
