Curiosity Thrilled the Cat

When Kathleen Paulson's boyfriend returned from a 2-week fishing trip married, she leaves her life in Boston and moves to Mayville Heights, Minnesota.

She takes over the classic Carnegie public library while it's being renovated, and quickly learns to love small-town life, making friends with her neighbors and even adopting two stray cats.

When the conductor of the town's Summer Music Festival is taken ill, the position is taken over by the arrogant Gregor Easton. Easton manages to alienate many of the town's residents, including Kathleen and her staff, when he pitches a fit because the Internet at the library is not yet functioning. Tabby cat Owen somehow sneaks into Kathleen's gym bag, and jumps on Easton's head when he bullies the librarian.

The next day, searching at the concert hall for her carpenter Oren, she finds Easton's dead body slumped over the piano, with a bloody gash on his head. Although Kathleen had never met the conductor before, she suddenly becomes the prime suspect in his death, and while trying desperately to divert suspicion from herself, she somehow manages the opposite.

Kathleen tries not to feel like an outsider, and wishes that her family and most of her friends weren't so far away, but she has two small, furry investigative assistants.

Although Owen's aid with the disagreeable Gregor Easton was surprising, Kathleen is even more surprised when the cats continue to appear out of nowhere just when she needs help.

This charming debut is kept from being cloying by wonderfully creepy villains, and humour that verges on the slapstick, but doesn't quite cross the line.

*FTC Full Disclosure: Many thanks to the publisher, who sent me a copy of the book for review purposes.

CURIOSITY THRILLED THE CAT was one of those books that you hear about before release day, you get excited about it, buy it on release day and then it sits in your TBR pile. I was so excited when I heard about CURIOSITY THRILLED THE CAT that I raced to the bookstore and bought it. Of course it then spent quite a few months in the ever-growing reading well. Well lately I've had a bit of a reading slump and I was eyeing my shelves and saw it sitting there. I thought I would give it a go. I thought maybe those magical cats might get me out of my reading slump. And, guess what? THEY DID!

CURIOSITY THRILLED THE CAT is the first book in the Magical Cats Mystery series and tells the story of a librarian, Kathleen, who has been adopted by two cats, Hercules and Owen (of course its cats that adopt us, not the other way around). Kathleen is working hard at the Mayville Heights Public Library, getting it restored, when suddenly she finds herself in the middle of a murder.

Okay so I'm not going to be subtle. I adored every single page of this book. I LOVED Hercules and Owen, and yes by the way Hercules is named after Kevin Sorbo (and if you don't understand this reference you are far too young!). They are full of so much mischief, and remind me of my own cats. I loved their magical, supernatural powers (which I won't spill - you have to read the book to find out!).

Adorable cats aside, I fell completely smitten for Mayville Heights. Being the first book in the series, Sofie Kelly, introduces us to a lot of fun, quirky characters in the town. Each time I met a new character I kept thinking "oh don't be the murderer" because I want to read more about these delightful people again and again.

As to the murder mystery itself, it was very enjoyable, and nope I didn't guess who did it, although towards the end I did get very close. It wasn't too predictable at all, and I had fun finding out who did it right alongside Kathleen.

I've already picked up SLEIGHT OF PAW from the library, and intend to start it very soon.

Cute story, written well. Has cats. Nothing to really complain about it but nothing exceptional.. Still, it was entertaining!

I've wanted to start this series for some time. Very glad I finally got to it. Cozies starring animals, especially cats it seems, are meant to be. Paranormal cozies starring magical cats? Mystical match.
This book is a fine example why I love cozies. I love suspending belief and enjoying a book with a murder to solve, a librarian main character, and a small town where I'd love to live. Add in the magical cats and I had a fun fast highly enjoyable read.

This is the first book in the Magical Cats Mystery Series. It’s well paced, the characters (especially the cats) are loveable and there were unexpected moments of humour. I’m looking Dorito reading the rest of the series and would recommend it if you’re looking for a lighthearted, small town mystery with plenty of cats!
