I tried. I won’t even claim this as a read for this year. I made it 23/550 pages and yes I didn’t really give it a chance but I was already skipping paragraphs and that’s a bad sign so I’ll just reread Anne of Green Gables or try Emily of New Moon.
for a little while, this book had me quite worried, because i thought i was going to have to give lucy maude a one or two star review, which simply seems sacrilegious. in the end - like, literally, the last fifty to seventy-five pages or so - it got better and i actually sort of liked it, but goodness gracious. getting there was sort of excruciating. pat is just a really difficult character, in the sense that i was incredibly annoyed at how insipid and twee she was for most of the book. everything she encounters is precious or sweet or darling and the idea of anything in her world changing, even if it's a good change, sends her into a tailspin of whiny panic and crying. so not someone i'd want to hang out with or with whom i can relate. and supporting characters are painted with too broad of a stroke. except maybe for hilary, whom i dug. but, even though i had to plod through the first part of the book, i'll still probably read the sequel ...

Pat leads a happy life at Silver Bush, her home which she utterly adores. But change is inevitable, and Pat can't stand it.
This is a peculiarly plotless book, following the rhythms of Pat's life as she grows from a child to adulthood. But being a LM Montgomery book, it is utterly charming. I loved how Pat 'loved very hard,' and the beauty of her daily life. However, I wish she had developed more characters, as Pat, Judy, and Jingle are the only ones who we learn much about.

I almost feel bad giving this book such a low score. Almost. There's no doubt in my mind that I don't like it. I didn't like Pat, her family, or the story. But, at the same time, I know where L.M Montgomery is coming from.
L.M. Montgomery is my favorite author of all time, bar none. Every book that I've read by her (with the exception of this one and Anne of the Island, I never really got into the Anne series as a whole) is one my list of favorite books of all time. So I was disappointed when I got this book for Christmas and did not like it. I was so upset by how much I didn't like it.
After doing a little research on L.M. while reading The Blue Castle (great book), I found out that she extremely depressed in her later life. This was one of he last books and I can only assume that she was thinking like Pat and created this character out of that. Montgomery wanted nothing to change, and so much did. It made me realize where she was coming from when she wrote this book. I still didn't like it, but I understood it now. So, this is definitely not the worst book I've read, but I still can't give it a very high rating.

Change of any sort is horrendous and Silver Bush is the best thing in the universe. And trees. There, I've spoilt the whole book for you, mwahahaha.
