Pretty good overall though definitely darker than the first two. A few of the big twists happen and even though they're a bit predictable the book was still enjoyable and I really felt for the characters.

POV
you know there is a spy that wants to kill you somewhere in your school.
someone who kimiya should "stay away from."
there is like only one person who fits the description but you DONT REALIZE IT.
then the person in question says your friend has been kidnapped by "the spy" and he has a horrible cover story with so many holes and you FOLLOW HIM INTO THE WOODS ALONE. and oh no! he turns out to be evil! what?!?!
and then your friend is killed by him. i remembered the part about aaron because ive read it before but not about alex at all.

Another fantastic story! And it wasn't too slow to start this time! I love all of the twists and turns of this one and the shocking ending. Just when I think they can't add much more, they throw that into the works.
Fabulous!

I’ve found this series to be relatively lighthearted but wow did the twists in this one pull me in.

I was enjoying this series immensely until I got to the end of this book. I don’t know what the authors were thinking, but i can’t stand it when a main character is knocked off. It feels like a cheap trick. Can’t be bothered to read any further.

*SOME SPOILERS AHEAD*

I did not enjoy reading 90% of this book. The story felt like there wasn't much going on. I much preferred the copper gauntlet because that one was more eventful and had a great feeling of adventure and discovery. I know this one was supposed to more so be a mystery rather than an adventure but I feel that even for a mystery it fell flat. Most of the characters investigation was like "it could be anyone in the school let's narrow it down" and then proceed to not narrow it down at all. Plus they don't think of obvious indications of who the spy is even though literally anyone following the story could. I don't care about the fact that I predicted who it was, I care that the characters weren't able to figure out until the VERY end. The most detective like thinking that was actually done only happened for like 2 pages in the second to last chapter.

Storyline aside there were also a lot of character choices I didn't agree with. I didn't like Jasper in the Iron Trial but I was growing to enjoy him in the Copper Gauntlet. But this book took all of that growth and threw it to the side with the fuck up Jasper made. The whole point the Copper Gauntlet made was "wow it turns out Jasper can be trusted and doesn't completely suck" and then proves that he can't be trusted. I also felt like they made Celia so unlikable after what she did. I enjoyed her character a lot in the first two books and I was really enjoying her character at first in this book until she did what she did. And I feel like the excuse and apology was stupid, because their is no excuse she did a bad thing by spreading the secret even if she only told 2 people. Throughout the other books I've had various ways to feel about Tamara. And for the most part in this book I thought she was good and I like her aside from a few parts. This is pretty common in the other books too but there were some weird moments with Call where he would get unnecessarily annoyed at stupid and little things. Aaron though, his character was great in this story because we got to see other sides of him, making him feel more real. Before this all we had seen was really happy nice Aaron and dutiful makar Aaron. In this book however, we got to see Aaron going through different such as anger, sadness, and shame (granted it was also sad to see him go through that because he didn't deserve it). Also just to add in here: I love Alastairs character so much and that's all I need to say.

There were a couple of ideas and concepts that could've have been explored more but I'd rather not go through all of that. So overall I didn't like this book. However the ending was AMAZING. It was sad, there were many reveals, and even more parallels drawn between Constantine and Call. I just wished that the rest of the book could have been more worthy of this ending. I'd rate this book before the ending 1 or 1.5 stars but the ending bumps it up to 2 or 2.5 . That's all, thank-you for coming to my Ted Talk about this book for children.

(Also wtf was up with the whole Jasper Celia thing?)
