Read aloud to my kids who couldn’t believe some of the story elements or character actions. The book was very old fashioned, but in a time period that we hadn’t read before, written in 1943 but seemingly set slightly earlier. Robert McCloskey describes the six Homer Price stories as preposterous stories that look at Midwestern life with humor and affection. That’s a good description. We enjoyed them, but the antics were a bit difficult to swallow for the kids.
Such a wonderful, charming and funny middle grade book. My son and I thoroughly enjoyed it and laughed a lot together 😄
good collection of short stories about Homer Price. Fun to read to May.
Read to my 7 year old. He said, "It was a really good book, and a lot the stories are good. My favorite story of all is the one with the doughnuts in it. It was so good that I was hoping it would be one big story in a small book. It ended too soon."
This is my second time reading it aloud because I read it to my two older children a few years ago. It's a completely charming book, with perfectly paired illustrations. The book and the people have a Mayberry type feel to them which adds to the charm.

I like Homer Price. It was about how Homer Price captured robbers without the sheriff's help. He put some pieces on the donut machine wrong and it started to get too many donuts. I really like it.
The intricate, crazy, old fashioned illustrations sucked me in. I'm unfortunately not fond of day in the life stories of eccentric characters that are eccentric just to be eccentric--or the redundant word usage as I just demonstrated. The narrative was so repetitive, I about strangled myself after about the fiftieth time I had to read aloud (I was reading it to my boys), "It's marvelous," she said. "Simply marvelous."
I did however extremely enjoy the plot twist of the one short story about the musical mouse trap...AFTER I got through the first part where I was bored to tears with the setup and the redundant writing. I could see how a child reading this might be entranced, my boys were mildly so, but that donut machine perked their ears...it's what made me snatch it off the shelf, too. Even though the story writing didn't live up to the donut machine, the donut machine sells it. I'd not recommend for a read aloud, but it could be a book that sucks a young reader in just to see what that donut machine is all about.
Plus, can we bring back this style of illustrations? 4.75 stars for the illustrations. (I had to take off a quarter though because there were 5 robbers in the bed when the story has only 4 robbers the entire time...and I can't fathom for the life of me why the illustrator would draw five when he's ALSO the author that wrote that there were only 4.) :)

I thought the boys would especially love the donut chapter, but we got that far and they weren't interested in reading further.
Classic. Handed the book to my son as soon as I was finished!
