My favorite of all of the Steinbeck that I've read...and I am not just saying that because of the lead characters' surname.

It’s been a long time since I let a masterpiece knock me over and take hold of me.

I’m glad I did it again

Tempted to give it five stars. East of Eden is a raw story that embraces the beauty of human beings and their relationships between them. While there are some inconsistencies in the book, these just add to the drama that is played out all along the story. A very captivating book from the very beginning and a book that is easily to recommend to everybody. Quite an easy read for being a classic.

Considering how much I love Steinbeck's other work, I found this a real struggle to get through. I didn't get drawn into the story the way I did with [b:Of Mice and Men|890|Of Mice and Men|John Steinbeck|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1367951092s/890.jpg|40283], or empathise with the main characters as I did reading [b:The Grapes of Wrath|18114322|The Grapes of Wrath|John Steinbeck|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1375670575s/18114322.jpg|2931549]. I found the twins of both generations entirely unlikeable.

Overall a disappointing read, but Steinbeck's skill cannot be denied.
