The character development was poignant and focused on the emotional journey of self-improvement. I greatly enjoyed the high level of vocabulary used—I found myself looking up definitions despite normally knowing every word in books! Eleanor’s relationships with other characters is amusing and touching as you watch her come into her own individual.

I was partially hoping that Raymond and Eleanor would get together
. I couldn't stand Eleanor at first. But as more details about her past were revealed I began to understand her quirks and I fell in love with her. This is a book about the power of friendship, and about overcoming ones past. It's so good!

i loved the character development and the discussions of mental health in this story. certainly didn’t expect abuse to play such a big part.

A very smooth read, quite gripping, didn't take too long

Pros:
- the writing flowed nicely and made it easy to read. The dialogue always felt realistic and the story carried along nicely.
- it also had quite an original premise which was executed well and I got caught up in seeing how it would all turn out.
and I'm glad it turned out well

- the side characters, Raymond, Laura, Bob, etc. were all well developed and made it feel like a little slice of life.

Cons:
- Didn't really love Eleanor (though the name didn't help) and while feeling vaguely bad for her, i definitely didn't 'sob and sob' like the one reviewer did. Some bits did hit too hard and just made me feel bad. The tone really reminded me of 'A man called Ove' and it was given to me by the same person. Unfortunately I don't think I'm a massive fan of this type of book really - the reality is too painful for me, too personal.

So I think my main disappoint was that I didn't feel much for the book and I won't be reading it again I'm afraid, though it was good for a break after the complicated 'Ninth house' book.

This was a very sweet story even with the the heavy topics discussed throughout. It's character driven, which I enjoy. I also loved that Eleanor is an autistic coded character.

It's a wonderful meditation on loneliness and not fitting in and how friendship can be an antidote to that. I was so glad that Eleanor and Raymond's friendship did not turn romantic/sexual - it allowed the book to avoid the trope of romantic love as the "fix" for a "broken" woman. In fact, I think Honeyman wrote the antithesis of that trope by showing how Eleanor's crush on the singer was rooted in fantasy and ultimately triggered a suicidal spiral. It was her friendships that saved her life, which is a refreshing break from the obsession with romance I often find in popular literature.

tw: child abuse, emotional abuse, trauma/PTSD, alcoholism, suicidal thoughts

* Returning to say I still think about this book sometimes, so I'm bumping up my rating. The line, "It's both good and bad, how humans can learn to tolerate pretty much anything, if they have to." lives in my head rent free. *

Mörkare än jag trodde att den skulle vara. Långsamt tempo och helt karaktärsdriven
