Something about the way Kadare writes is so engaging, so understandable and relatable. I don’t know how to describe it, it’s just a really good book.

The Palace of Dreams has a very distinct Orwellian feel to it. The atmosphere is described so well that you can't help to feel yourself getting lost down the endless corridors of the Palace of Dreams, trying to find your way around. This macabre atmosphere fits very well with the story of the totalitarian state, which is collecting the dreams of all its citizens to try to predict future events that might threaten the survival of the empire, and its leaders. While not being as encompassing in its total surveillance and brain washing as in Orwell's 1984, quite far from it actually, it's still a dystopian world in which the government have gotten all too much power.

Classic interesting Kadare, mixing reality and albanian history with some not too far-fatched fiction.
