I love Bradbury, but somehow had managed not to read (all) of this until now. Some of it was really uncomfortable, and some is now very dated, but most of it was funny and interesting and thought-provoking.

More poetical than hard science, interesting in its own way but not my cup of tea in general.

Ray Bradbury has the ability to transport you back in time when life went at a slower pace while taking you on a trip to Mars. This book is like being transported to a "home" you never visited before or having your spirit be given a massage.

The Martian Chronicles is a collection of intertwined stories which shows how Mars can both distill our humanity and change us for ever.

“And the men of Mars realized that in order to survive they would have to forgo asking that one question any longer: Why live?”

I was a bit disappointed - the price of high expectations. I can see that it may have been great in its times but they aren't as impressive now. Though a few of these stories were awesome, others were below average. It is written in a series of unrelated episodes (with very few repeat characters) circling around, first, men’s efforts to contact with Martins; then to colonalise the planet and finally their own destruction through war. It is particularly remarkable that the story regarding burning of books should come just before people started talking about war on Earth. Bradbary’s prose is simple (not a criticism) but it has some beautiful sentences throughout the book.

“We Earth Men have a talent for ruining big, beautiful things.”

“If you can’t have reality, a dream is as good.”
