Any book with a hint of crime mystery immediately becomes my favourite. But this is probably the first time I've ever had the chance to read something that includes crime as well as fantasy fiction. Also this was my first book by the author so I wasn't sure what to expect. Set in Mumbai suburbs, this book explores Indian mythology. Beast is a book that is sure to entice readers till the very last page.

When a brutal murder case presents itself in the suburbs of Mumbai, Assistant commissioner of police, Aditi Kashyap takes over the task of nabbing the culprits. Very soon she is dragged into the scary world of Saimhas, werelions who have coexisted with humans for centuries. There is in-depth detail about how the werelions came into existence and how they managed to be hidden for so long. Then Prithvi comes into the picture, an Enforcer who has been hired to kill the murderer. One thing that I enjoyed about the author's writing is her precision in nailing the characters. It's detailed and also has bouts of emotion whenever the book demands.

There were many things that I liked about this book. The inclusion of Indian mythology about Narasimha whom Indians worship diligently impressed me as a reader. She has focused on relationships be it professional or personal. Aditi's persona has a strong feminist picture which I absolutely loved. That being said, I however felt that the book dragged quite a bit. The book jumps from present to Prithvi's past which felt quite lengthy. I had to push myself to finish the book inspite of it being well narrated. A much smaller and crisper version would have excited me more. But I'm very eager to read more books by the author now that I know how beautifully she weaves stories.

A gruesome murder shocks Mumbai and ACP Aditi Kashyap has been called to investigate the crime scene. The moment she arrives, she knows this isn’t going to be an easy case to crack. She investigates the crime scene and is surrounded by many theories about the murder that doesn’t involve the hand of a human being. The marks, the way the bodies have been manhandled, everything hints to an unusual animal attack, an animal that took it’s own sweet time to kill the enemy.

On the other end, Enforcer Prithvi has been assigned to secretly find this animal, a WERELION and hunt him down. But, Prithvi has his own past to deal with. A past that he hasn’t been able to forget and lives everyday with it’s haunting memories. The moment he comes face to face with the werelion, his world collapses. The haunting memories come back with new secrets to unravel and he needs to dig deeper to find the buried secrets of his past.

I have grown up reading about half-human half-animal stories and have always been fascinated about their existence. As I grew up, werewolves came into the scene but, werelions took me by storm. If you see this is an metaphorical sense, Beast can resemble to the animal living inside all of us, that has been fed lies throughout his life and is waiting for that one moment to let lose and attack the culprits.

Krishna Udayasankar’s writing left me in shock. The narration is gripping and I couldn’t help myself from flipping pages after pages to unravel the mystery of this werelion. The writing style is steady and fast paced without a dull moment. With every chapter came a new mystery and it kept me at the end of my seat. The book is in different point of views, Prithvi, ACP Aditi and the werelion. What took me by surprise was the vivid description of the werelion and I could imagine it in my head, walking slowly, circling it’s prey before attacking. That one scene gave me the chills that we expect from an epic fantasy novel.

If you like werewolves, vampires or any other magical beast, you need to pick this epic blend of mystery and fantasy!
