I have devoured PRK's previous nonfiction works, and while there were some pieces in this collection that I would have lost interest in had I read them in The New Yorker, the good ones are good. The only beach reach you need this summer.

Favorites were: "The Jefferson Bottles" (I love seeing a Koch brother get screwed!) "Crime Family" (sociopathic sibling drama) "The Empire of Edge" (Billions) "A Loaded Gun" (more sociopathic sibling drama) "The Hunt for El Chapo" (Narcos: Mexico 2.0) "Winning" (Hollywood is trash!) "The Worst of the Worst" (workaholic woman drama) and of course, the crown jewel of this collection, the tender and beautiful profile of Anthony Bourdain: "Journeyman."

While not every single one of these articles clicked for me, the majority REALLY did. I found these stories absolutely captivating. Patrick Radden Keefe is a gifted writer and enthralling to listen to in audiobook format. This is one I would gladly add to our permanent library.

Patrick Radden Keefe is a pro, and not giving this five stars is more about the format (I have to be moved by something on a personal level to grant 5 stars, which is hard when you're dealing with isolated, but all extremely well done stories).

I found the iron ore mining one the LEAST interesting; otherwise, was captivated by each of these.

Radden Keefe is incredible at research, but he also spools the information out so beautifully that you're loathe to put any individual essay down.

I think it’s safe to say that I’ll read anything this man writes. He takes on fascinating topics and deep dives to cover it from all angles and explores different characters and motivations. His essays are dense and long, but when I finally finished the book I felt sad that I was at the end. Can’t wait for his next curiosity.
