An insightful glimpse at vulnerability, shame, and living wholeheartedly. I've learned a few methods I'd like to try in my teaching.
2.5⭐ We’ve Only Got One Life To Live. Let’s be free.
(Star score reflecting the book’s effectiveness to me, not necessarily the book’s quality/effectiveness to others. Review contains content spoilers.)
I read two self-help books this year and they weren’t much help. I hope that doesn’t discount the books too much, I hope it just means I don’t need that kind of help anymore. I did need that kind of help back in 2016 when I stomached ‘How To Fail At Everything’ by Scott Adams. It had a few helpful snippets (most of which I captured in the Goodreads quote feature), but Steven Covey’s 7 Habits gave me the tools I needed professionally and as a human being doing their best in society.
I’ve said it was the last self-help I book I ever needed, but because it was so impactful, I give others a chance. I’ve had a funny life, I’m messy, and I’m listening. This one was okay. I think the messages were vital. I sure wish I’d found this book at 20 instead of 30. I’ve lived behind a smoke screen for a long time, I was conditioned to.

If used thoughtfully, this book will stay with you. Brown raises some incredibly insightful points about topics that many are afraid to even think about. I loved her voice throughout and many of her findings and ideas can be transformative. My issue is that this is a book that needs to be discussed and might benefit from specific strategies, however, that could be intentional.
