This book made an everlasting mark on my psyche. It was absolutely horrific in the most mesmerizing way. As someone who loves horror, this actually terrified me but I was hooked. It was like Lord of the Flies meets Resident Evil; it’s about survival of the fittest but they’re facing off against bioengineered worms. Warning: if you are bothered by body horror and the harm of animals, tread lightly. There were a few parts that were definitely an exposure for me, but I was so immersed in the story. It’s so revolting and disturbing to get through but it’s like you can’t stop reading because of how well-written it is. I think I’ll have to read more of Nick Cutter’s books now.

I got sucked into this book VERY easily. I attached to characters quickly and still found the plot to be riveting. I loved it from start to finish, even if some things towards the end I felt could have been written better. The plot has points where I would have, personally, chosen to go a different route to make thing more exciting from a horror aspect. All in all, it was a great read that I still think about often. One of my favorites!!

Trigger Alert: Description of strong violence against pets.
The last 5 chapters of this book altered my brain chemistry. The climax builds such an anxiety inducing experience. This is the first horror novel I’ve read and it did not disappoint.
The suspense and fear actually drips down every single page. Nick Cutter, in honoring horror legends you have created a masterpiece. The audiobook is incredible and adds to the imagination of the worms, I felt as though I could hear the squirming right next to me (along with other scary noises). This is actually body horror at its finest.
To my favorite characters: Newton and Max… oh my sweet children you deserved so much more.

Writing is good, and I like the style of inserting interviews and articles that happened after the fact to give the reader more information. The creep factor was fantastic! Had me shivering a couple times! Only reason to not give 5 stars was that some of the science was not accurate (e.g. scientist would use scientific terminology), and the story wasn’t always consistent (e.g. guy with ruptured stomach has surgery and the surgeon incises his stomach...) But overall a winner for creepy book club book!
