TW WORMS couldn’t get through it

I really liked THE TROOP. A pretty entertaining horror novel. The characters were great and each kid was developed well during the story. THE TROOP contained a bit of gore, but Nick Cutter didn't take it too far like i have seen many other authors do. Overall a good read.

This book got under my skin; literally and emotionally. It’s disturbing, raw, and incredibly well written. The body horror is intense but what stuck with me most was the psychological breakdown of these boys and how deeply the trauma cuts.
It’s not just a horror story. It’s a story about the things that stay with you, long after the nightmare ends.

What makes The Troop so horrifying is how real it feels. Cutter writes the experience of the boys in a way that is both visceral and terrifying. I particularly loved the addition of the newspaper snippets and court transcripts which built up this world and the severity of what was actually happening to the boys. I went in to this book expecting something gross and horrifying and although I got that there was also so much emotion woven throughout.

I went into this book extremely excited as I had heard such great things. I felt terribly let down by this book, even if I don't factor in all the praise it received.

It seemed to me the author simply thought of everything they could to gross out the reader. I didn't feel there was any actual horror or suspense. I personally do not mind gore in the least, but it has to be supported by a decent plot and storytelling. I forced myself to finish this one hoping that in the last few pages the book would somehow redeem itself.
