My first experience with body horror. I thought those aspects of the book were enjoyable and well done, but I think the best parts of the book were actually thoughts and feelings of the boys in the troop. The author did an excellent job conveying how these young teenagers thought about things and negotiated with each other. Was a pretty moving book in some ways given how some of the friendships evolve and change. I felt the writing was really good and would almost like to read something non-horror by Nick Cutter as I thought the descriptions in general were excellent and very evocative. Enjoyed this book more than I thought I would part-way through.

The Troop is about a group of boys and their scoutmaster who go on their annual camping trip to an isolated island, then become exposed to a bio-engineered nightmare.

This book kept me engaged and interested, I couldn't put it down.
It wasn't as scary as I expected but it was really gross and creepy, a perfect October read.
I really liked it, I liked the characters, the science, the writing, the formatting of the story.
That being said while it was enjoyable I think I had too high expectations for it, bringing it down a bit.
It was going to be 3 stars UNTIL the end. I think the ending was so, so good. Immediately bumping it up to a 4 star read.
So great book, skin-crawling creepy, but not a favourite.
