Only a psychopath could give this book 5 stars and sleep with themselves at night. It was SO. GOOD. will be hard to recommend to people without the warning that it is *fucked up*/eerie/gross/a book you can only read when the sun is shining.

I have always read horror novels- I guess you could say they are my "dirty little secret" in the blogging world because I never blog about these types of books. Why? Not many people, especially those who tend to follow my reviews, read this genre. That's fine of course, we all have different tastes in books. But because it's getting closer to October and Halloween, I figured this would be the perfect time to dive back into a genre that I have always loved. This book, it's horrifying, macabre, and unsettling. Why? Because when you get down to the bones of this book you realize it's too close for comfort . I won't say why because that would ruin the book for potential readers, but I will say that it is in the realm of possibility for occurring... You never know! That's what makes it terrifying.
Nick Cutter is a new to me author. Will I read more of his books? It's a possibility. None of the other ones he has published really speak to me, but I will be on the lookout in the future for whatever he intends to publish next.
Warning: If you are squeamish, this book won't be a good fit for you. It's gory and bad things happen to innocents in the book.

I think this is probably a 3.75. It was definitely good and it went by very quickly despite being a rather long book. The characters were pretty fleshed out I enjoyed the boys' back stories. There were some cringy parts, but I don't think I felt like it was as intense as others who have read it. It was definitely interesting to read it right now, with the pandemic going on. Some very big similarities, but also differences. It had a very big Stephen King meets Lord of the Flies vibe.
