Well, I can certainly understand why this is such an acclaimed novel. The twist is absolutely diabolical
though for me, the last scene kinda ruined it. If it had to be included, why couldn't we learn more about the daughter's suicide attempt and how that drove her mother's actions in the final chapter?
. I didn't see it coming, even though I'd pegged Suspect X's "devotion" as incredibly creepy.

However, I just did not warm to Detective Galileo at all here. He keeps way too much to himself and speaks in riddles most of the time, which is not only frustrating for the police, but frustrating to read as well. My preference for the author's Kaga series continues, along with my disappointment that only 4 of the books have been translated. Some of the others have such intriguing plots!

But fans of mysteries and thrillers everywhere should definitely give this one a try. The author is consistently brilliant, even if not always to my taste.

Although this is actually #3 in Keigo Higashino's Detective Galileo series, it appears to be the first available in English. We miss a bit of the background in the relationship between Detective Kusanagi and his physicist friend Dr. Manabu Yukawa (known as Detective Galileo) but its absence is not detrimental to this story. This was a very enjoyable story that, at least for me, has some Agatha Christie aspects. Character development seems to take second place to plot manipulation, but one still gets a very good "feel" for Japan, personal relationships, and cultural patterns.

Japanese murder mystery with complicated mathematical plot with cameo by some Clay math prize problems. Perfect for a mathematician on vacation in Japan. I look forward to the movie and tv show!

This was such a great mystery novel! I have yet (at the time of writing this) to read more by this author, but his style of writing is so interesting. Switching from each characters perspective is done so well and offers twists and turns with the biggest plot twist at the end. Your jaw will be on the floor by then. This is definitely a book I would read again in the future.

Death Note vibes are strong with this one!
