A fascinating concept, very comprehensively explored. I never would have thought a first person perspective from a hive mind could make sense, but this was handled quite well. And it was very much focused on the characters rather than the technology, which I always prefer. The emotional beats of the first half, even two thirds of the book, were quite good.

That said, some of the actual plot toward the end was… confusing, a bit hard to follow. Specifically because a lot of it had to do with these hive minds not actually being fully unified… it was basically very hard to tell who was on what side, and what the goals of each side even were. I know there are sequels, but I’m not really left caring enough about the plot to want to read them.

Unfortunately, it really did not live up to all the praise that it got.

The characters are annoying and dull, and the story isn't any better. The constant flashbacks just get in my way of the story.

There was a small moment where even though I disliked it, I was low-key curious, but sadly, that didn't last.

I appreciate that the author has created this complex world, it's just not for me.

I appreciate how much worldbuilding Leckie was able to do and the efficiency with which she did it. It took a while, but I also found myself quite invested in the protagonist & deuteragonist. I think the key issue I had with this book, would be the "it took a while". The constant shifting back and forth between "present" and the flashback often killed any momentum that had built up over the course of a chapter.
